Herbert was born in 1917 in Florida to Tony and Elnora James. He married Gracie Mae in Leon County, Florida, in 1941.[1] During World War II, he served in the US Army.[2] When he passed away, he was interred in the Devotion garden at Tallahassee Memory Gardens, Tallahassee, Florida. He shares a grave marker with his wife. His marker is inscribed: Tec 5 US Army World War II
