Alan Thomas (Tom) James, 77, died on January 24, 2008 in Brownsville. Tom was born August 11, 1930 in Sugar Grove, Illinois to Nellie and Evan James. He graduated from the University of Dubuque in 1952 with a Bachelor in Music and also did additional course work at the University of Iowa and the University of Northern Iowa.
He was a highly respected high school band director. He started in 1952 in Colo, Iowa. After three years he moved to MFL Community Schools, in Monona, Iowa for 33 years. In 1974, he served as president of the Iowa Bandmasters Association, and was a ten year member of the Executive Board of the Iowa High School Music Association, serving as the instrumental music representative.
Tom and Helen Moved to Decorah, Iowa in 2006, and have maintained a winter residence at Riverbend Resort in Brownsville, Texas. His hobbies included travel, golf, flying, restoring antique cars, woodcarving, crafts and singing in the church choir.
His parents, his first wife, Donna Beth James d.1987 and a brother, Bruce James, predeceased him. He is survived by his second wife, Helen Hoff James; three children, Greg Brenda James of West Union, Iowa, Tim Jodi James of Parker, Colorado and Elizabeth Eric Petersen of Newton, Iowa; four grandchildren, Katie Wayne Slack of Dike, Iowa, Sarah James of Ames, Iowa and Leanne and Noah Petersen of Newton, Iowa.[1]
