DAVID JAMESON was born in St. Anne’s Parish (Essex County), Virginia. He was a prominent merchant in Yorktown and an inventor. He became a member of Patrick Henry’s privy council in 1777. He went on to become Lieutenant Governor under Governor Thomas Nelson in 1781 and then a state senator in 1783. Jameson served as Governor for just over one week pending the accession of Benjamin Harrison.[1]

  • Note: exact date of birth is not known.

David was born about 1723, the son of Thomas and Margaret (Jennings) Jameson, in St. Anne's Parish, Essex County, Province of Virginia. This is where he was raised. Sometime after 1751 he married Mildred Smith, daughter of Edmund and Agnes (Sclater) Smith. David and Mildred would have no children of their own.

Mr. Jameson it is said graduated from Princeton College, N. J. He established himself in business as a merchant, and was a prominent citizen of Yorktown, and favorably known throughout the state of Virginia. In 1793 he was a member of the state senate. He was made a member of Patrick Henry’s privy council in 1777 and in 1780-1 he was Lieutenant-Governor of the Commonwealth in the administration of Gov. Thomas Nelson, and stood as acting Governor for several months when Nelson was ill. David was a true Patriot during the Revolutionary War, working to hold the administration of Virginia in place.

David and Mildred would inherit Mildred's parents' home known as the Edmund Smith House in Yorktown. They would reside there for many years.

In David's will dated May 21, 1793, he left all his worldly possessions to his nephews John Jameson and David Jameson of Culpepper and David Jameson of Caroline County, son of brother James Jameson.

David's burial site has not been found, but Mildred's body is buried in the Moore House Cemetery in Yorktown, York County, Virginia.
