In 1910, Herbert Janin, 30 b. Aug 1869, was renting a house at 1207 Josephine in New Orleans' 10th Ward, 7th Precinct. He was a traveling salesman. He and his wife Julia L., 30 b. Jan 1870, lived with two children: Elmira, 4 b. Feb 1896, and Julia, 3 b. Apr 1897. All were born in Louisiana.[15]
Herbert L. Janin, 41, worked as a traveling salesman in drugs in 1910. He lived in a house he owned at 1915 Calhoun in New Orleans' 14th Ward with his wife Julia L., 37, and five children. The couple has been married for 18 years, and Julia has had 11 children, but only 5 are still living.[16]

In 1920, Herbert Janin was working as a salesman for a drug house. He still lived on Calhoun with his wife Julia and five children.[17]
Herbert's first wife Julia died in 1925. In 1930, sixty year old Herbert (indexed as Jonin) was living in a rented house at 3321 Napoleon Avenue, Ward 12, with his wife Katherine, 40. He was working as a drug salesman.[18]
He died on 16 May 1931, aged 61, in New Orleans, Orleans Parish, Louisiana.[19] His obituary reads as follows:
"HERBERT L. JANIN LAST RITES TODAY
"New Orleans Resident Dies After Illness of Several Months
"Herbert Lawrence Janin, 61 years old, 3321 Napoleon avenue, died at 6:20 a. m. Saturday at his residence after an illness of several months. He had been associated with I. L. Lyons and Company for the last 49 years and was well known in business and fraternal circles, having been a member of several Carnival organizations, the Chess, Checkers and Whist club, Louisiana Lodge No. 102, F. and A. M., and an active worker in the Doll and Toy Fund committee.
"Mr. Janin was born in New Orleans in August, 1869. He was married in February, 1892, to Mis Jullia Fassmann, who died six years ago. Later he married Miss Katherine Cosgrove of Philadelphia. Surviving are the widow, four children by the first marriage, Mrs. Walter Hancock, Mrs. Richard Barlow and Robert A. Janin of New Orleans and Mrs. Milton Moberley of St. Louis; three brothers, Walter W. Janin of New Orleans and Leon F. and Henry Janin of Biloxi, Miss., and a sister, Mrs. Milton Fleming of New Orleans.
"Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p. m. today from Tharp-Sontheimer-Tharp, Inc. 3229 Carondelet street. Burial will be in the Masonic cemetery, with ceremonies by Louisiana Lodge No. 102. Honorary pallbearers are ...."[20]
A newspaper article about the death of Morgan Hall Janin, who died in May 1917, stated that he was survived by his wive, two children, father L. S. Janin and five siblings: sister Mrs. (Dr.) S.F. Fleming, and four brothers Herbert L., M.W., L.S. Jr., and H.A Janin.[21]

Two nurses, Emily Decuir, 30, and Irma Ruffin, 18, lived also with the family. All were born in Louisiana except Emil Lang, who was born in Virginia.
