Biography

Jacobus Jansz was an early resident of the vicinity of Albany, New York, probably the Colony of Rensselaerswyck. He is named as a church member in the earliest surviving records (1683) of the Reformed Dutch Church of Albany and is identified as the father of two children whose baptisms (in 1684 and 1686) are recorded in Albany church records.[1]

His origins are not known. He may have been born in the Netherlands or in New Netherland. Based on the estimated birth date of his oldest child, his date of birth is estimated as 1648 or earlier.

The name of his wife is inferred to be Jannetje. The 1683 list of Albany church members includes the names Jacobus Jansz, Jannetje Jacobsz, and Mayken Jacobusz in that sequence.[2]

The recorded or inferred children of Jacobus Jansz are:[1]

  1. Mayken, born about 1668 or earlier, listed on the 1683 list of Albany church members as Mayken Jacobusz, recorded as Mayken Jacobs when she transferred her membership to the Bergen church and as Maaike Cobussen at her marriage in Bergen in 1686.
  2. Aaltje, born about 1670; recorded as Aaltje Kobusz at Albany in 1688 in her banns of marriage to Johannis Jorisz.[3]
  3. Jannetje, born about 1672, recorded as Jannetje Jacobus when she was admitted to the Bergen church by transfer from New Albany on 6 October 1690.
  4. Roelof, estimated birth date of 1675, recorded as Roelof Kobes at his 1700 marriage in Hackensack.
  5. Hendrik, born about 1678-1680
  6. Brant, baptized in Albany, 6 April 1684.
  7. Gerrit, baptized in Albany, 24 October 1686.

All of the children are assumed to have been born in Rensselaerswyck or Albany, although Roelof was recorded as "of Bergen" at his marriage.

Research Notes

The following marriage record, possibly from William Nelson. Documents Relating to the Colonial History of the State of New Jersey; Marriage Records, 1665-1800, was identified in this profile as being a record for one the children of this man, but the basis for this identification is unclear:

  • 1691. 5 Apr. Day, Willem, born on Barbadus Isld, l. near Hackensack, and Annatje Jacobs, b. near David's plantation in Bergon Co., l. at Hasymus, m. April 14 at Bergen by Dr. Selyns.

I would like to see the other children added to this family, as the research from the Donald Lines Jacobus article has been carefully presented here. The other children to add would be: Brant Jacobus, Hendrik (not yet added) and Garret (not yet added). I am related to the Jacobuses by marriage to families in the Verona/Cedar Grove area of New Jersey. I will have to see if I can move upward in Hendrik and Garret's lines to be able to connect them to the tree. But Brant would be the simplest to add. On his profile Jacobus-99 it currently says he is the son of Roelof Jacobus (from a Ryerson genealogy); however the Donald LInes Jacobus article showing him as part of this family is very well explained.

If you want to add profiles for several of the children of this PPP profile, your best bet is to request to be a profile manager on this profile. Would you be willing to take on that responsibility? (If so, I can add you -- I have your email address, so I could do that.)

Certainly, that would be great. Thanks so much.

Thanks, I added Brant to his father Jans. How do I now add him to his mother Oothout-2? I tried it both ways (son to mother and mother to son, but neither worked).

I connected Brant to his mother and I made you a profile manager for her profile, so you can connect other children as appropriate.

I'm reviewing the ancestry of genealogist Donald Lines Jacobus who traces his line back to this couple through a line currently not yet attached. May I attach this line? My source is his 1949 article in The American Genealogist (25:16-...)

This is the progenitor of the Jacobus family of New Jersey, known briefly as the Jacobusse family. He was in Albany as early as 1666, as seen by Maaike's marriage record of 1686, but probably before. Jacobus has been elusive for most official sources, as there were several Jacob Jansens in Albany, but this is the one without an alias. Family researchers have also been very serious and their work is well sourced.

Jacobus was probably not born in New York, it is more likely that he immigrated.

I haven't seen any source for the name Oothout though the family had close ties with the Van Ness family (son Gerrit married one) and it may be assumed. The only things that are certain about his wife are that she was named Jannetje and that she was not born in the 1670s.
