Biography

Marritje Jans was born in the Netherlands. Since her first known child was baptized in 1657, she is assumed to have been born in the 1630s.

She married Jan Teunisz in the Netherlands and had at least two children there before immigrating to New Netherland in 1661. On 9 May 1661 Jan Theunissen from Amsterdam was listed as a passenger on the ship De St. Jan Baptist, sailing from Netherlands to New Netherland. He was accompanied by a wife and two children, ages 1 1/2 and 4 years old. Arent Teunissen, Jan's brother, was a passenger on the same voyage, traveling with a wife and two children.[1]

At least one more child of her first marriage was born in New Netherland.

Her first husband died before 19 March 1676, when Marritje Jans, recorded as the widow of Jan Theuniszen, registered banns of marriage with Willem Janszen Romen, a widower.

According to Schulze and Brooks, Marritje Jans was twice widowed when she married Hendrick Obee in 1692.[2][3] They had no issue.[4]

The last known record for Marritje is her marriage to Hendrick Hendricksen Obee in New York in 1692. [2]

Research Notes

This baptism record, from Amsterdam, Nederland, was included in this profile and purported to be hers, but there is no apparent evidence for identifying it as her baptism, and the father's name (Abram Jansz) is incompatible with her patronymic name of Jans:

Baptism
  • 1634 Nov 30. Marrijtje. Abram Jansz, Trijntjen Sijmons. [6]

Jans-4540 and Jans-62 appear to represent the same person because: I think these are intended to represent the same woman, based on the match between the profiles for the husband. See merge notes at Teunisz-24.

In this duplicate profile, Marritje is currently listed as the mother of her third husband. That is obviously incorrect, and these profiles (for two Hendrick Obes) also need to be merged as a consequence.

Added baptisms possible children, not sure , because it looks like there were more couples with the same names baptizing children (one couple from an earlier period also, but too early to be this Jan and Marritje)

I wonder if Maritie Jans was sister to Geesje Jans?
