In family diaries, his siblings called him Johannes. It is possible that his middle name was von Riesen. In Nebraska he used the name John.
Johannes or John was born 16 October 1857 in Berdyansk, Russia. He was the eldest son of Cornelius Jansen and Helen Von Riesen. In May 1973 Cornelius's family left Russia for America by ship and arrived in Quebec, Canada. In 1874 the family moved to Mount Pleasant, Iowa. Their next move was to Beatrice, Nebraska where the family began sheep farming.
On 24 August 1882, John married Albertine Penner at Beatrice. They lived in Beatrice and started their family. Their children were: William, Henry, Helen, Gertrude, Betty, Cornelius and Charles. John was fluent in five languages. He wanted to have a career as a land agent who would assist new immigrants coming from Britain, Europe and the United States as they opened new areas of Saskatchewan. In 1902 John chose the Saskatchewan area between Manitou Lake, north to Humboldt, east and south to the shores of Quill Lake and south to where the C.N.R. railway was to be built. In 1904 he returned to Nebraska, sold his farm and moved to the Prairie Rose area northeast of Jansen, Saskatchewan with his sons, William and Henry. John worked for a land company and it was his job to take prospective buyers out to see the country. He set up his homestead at (NE 27-33-19-W2).
In 1905 John brought his wife, children, livestock and supplies to Humboldt, Saskatchewan by rail. From there they used horses and wagons to move to his homestead. Their first home, a sod house, was later replace by a two-story wooden house. John was busy showing land to new settlers and improving his homestead. Church services were held in their home. After about fifteen years, sons William and Henry returned to the USA. The rest of the family remained. Albertine died suddenly in 1925. John and his sons Cornelius and Charles then moved to Jansen. The town of Jansen was named after John Jansen. John passed away on 10 February 1932 and was buried in Jansen Cemetery.
