Gerrit Jansz is suggested to be the father of New Netherland immigrant settler Wolphert Gerretse van Kouwenhoven and his brother Willem Gerritsz Couwenhoven, but the identification is speculative. Relevant records are sparse. These men's patronymic names indicate that their father's given name was Gerrit, but their records do not provide evidence for their father's patronymic name. Theories suggesting that van Couwenhoven was an inherited family name have been discredited, so their families' use of the name suggests that they had an association with "Couwenhoven" as a place name in their early lives. In 1564 a Gherit Jansz was recorded as the tenant on the estate farm Couwenhoven in the neighborhood Coelhorst on the Hoogland near Amersfoort. He had previously been a tenant on land in the Duyst in the district of Hoogland. It was suggested that this Gherit Jansz was the father of Wolphert and Willem, but this identification is uncertain. Because Gherit Jansz had previously been the tenant on another farm (and assuming that he had signed a standard six-year tenancy contract there at age 21 or older) he would have been at least 27 years old in 1564, and thus at least in his 40s by the time the inferred sons were born. Tenant farmers in that time period had a very short life expectancy and their tenure as tenant farmers was limited to about 15 years due to the physical requirements of the work, so it is not likely (but not impossible) that Gherit Jansz was alive and still working on the estate when the sons were born.[1]
Research Notes
This is poorly sourced content from earlier profile versions. Note that it is not credible that the father of Wolfert and Willem was born as early as 1516.
