Ellen Jaques was christened on 28 Aug 1835 at the church of St Mary the Virgin in Prescot, Lancashire. She was the daughter of Samuel and Jane Jaques. Her father's occupation was recorded as tool maker, and the family's address as Windle.

By June 6th 1841, the family were living in Eccleston; Ellen's father was a tool maker.
