Biography

James was a Friend (Quaker)

James Jay was born on July 27,1800, in Newberry County, South Carolina, to Layton Jay and Elizabeth Edwards. [1] Like many South Carolina Quakers, his family moved to the free state of Ohio shortly after the turn of the century, where he married Lucinda Brock on August 3, 1822, in Clinton County, Ohio. [2] In 1830 he lived in Harveysburg, Warren County, Ohio. [3] On October 22, 1835 in Hendricks County, Indiana, James and wife Lucinda and children Susannah, Mary, Keturah and Layton were accepted into the Fairfield Monthly Meeting. [4] Wife Lucinda (Brock) Jay died in 1839. [5] On April 21, 1841 he married Sibby and/or Libby Sanders, in Hendricks County, Indiana. [6] In 1850 he lived in Decatur, Marion County, Indiana, with wife Sibby and children Layton, Lydia, Amy, Mark and Jon. [7] In 1860 he was living in Decatur, Marion County, Indiana, with wife Sibby and children Amy, Mark and Rhoda. [8] In 1870 he was living in Decatur, Marion County, Indiana, with daughters Amy and Rhoda. [9] In 1880 he was living in Valley Mills, Marion County, Indiana, with daughter Amy. [10] James Jay died on August 21, 1882 in Marion County, Indiana. He was buried in Easton Friends Cemetery, West Newton, Marion County, Indiana. [11] [12]
