Biography

Cynthia Ann Jay was born on 05 May 1832 in Ohio, the daughter of Dennis "Denny" Jay and Mary (Jones) Jay. She was christened in the Mill Creek Quaker Monthly Meeting, Miami County, Ohio.[1]

The 1850 United States Census[2] found Denny Jay, a 41 year old white male married head of household, living in Mill, Grant, Indiana, United States. The original record shows that Denny was working as a farmer, and all but the youngest two children were in school. Members of the household were as follows:

Ella is listed as her daughter, single, born in Indiana to a mother born in Ohio and a father born in North Carolina, but there is no mention of an Ella in her children's census records before 1900. It may be a nickname for Mary, whose birth year roughly matches, but this is not confirmed. Members of the household were as follows:
