Biography

The first we learn about Richard Jay is that he is mentioned in this article: Committed to our county gaol: Richard Jay, convicted of assaulting Ann Meek at the parish of Ledbury.[1] He is missing in the 1841 census (possibly in gaol). In the 1851 census he is listed as single, Ann Meek is listed as single and John Meek Jay is listed as his natural son and a scholar.[2] In 1861, Richard Jay is still listed as single and Ann Meek is listed as a servant in his household, along with borders and John Jay.[3] In the last quarter of 1861, Richard Jay marries Ann Meek.[4] He dies at the beginning of 1871.[5]

Research Notes

Ann Meek (John Jay Meek's mother) and Richard Jay were not married when John Jay Meek was born. He is listed in the England and Wales birth registers as John Meek. In the 1851 census, he is listed as Richard Jay's natural son, quite generous of the census taker.
