Biography

Eliza was born in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire in 1813. Her exact place of birth is not known as both Mitcheldean and Drybrook are variously referred to in her census records. These places are within just a few miles of each other so perhaps she was born somewhere between the two.

On 11th September 1836 Eliza married James Baynham in Abenhall, a small village not far from Mitcheldean.

By 1841 the couple had moved to Middle Marsh, Leominster, Herefordshire and had two daughters, Susan, aged four, and one year old Ann Molina.

Judging by the locations in which their children were born it seems that James relocated quite regularly with his work in the gas industry. The next two children, Mary Ann and James were born at Burford, near Tenbury Wells, Worcestershire while Andrew was born in Dudley in 1846.

Eliza and James had moved once more by the date that Eliza Jane was born in Shipston-on-Stour, Warwickshire in 1849 and the family were still in that town when the 1851 census was taken.

One year later in 1852 their seventh child, Stephen, was born, also in Shipston-on-Stour. A further relocation followed before their last child, another daughter named Molina, entered the world in 1859 in Shifnal, Shropshire.

The 1861 census shows that the family were residing in High Street, Shifnal. The two eldest daughters had by then left home and six children remained with their parents.

It appears that Eliza and her family were to settle in Shifnal as they were still in residence there in 1871. Only Eliza, Stephen and Molina, the three youngest children, had not left home.

By 1881 Eliza and James had returned to their Forest of Dean roots and were residing in Station Road, Newnham on Severn. Living with them were their son, Stephen, his wife, Elizabeth, and young grandchildren Ellen Eva, Stephen and James.

No record of Eliza has been found after 1881.
