Biography

Merton Leonadis “Onnie” Jeffers was born in 1879. He was the son of Francis Jeffers and Anna McIntire. Merton’s father had a successful lumber business, and he was expanding it into Texas.

Unfortunately Merton’s father was murdered when Merton was only two years old. After his father’s murder, Merton and his family moved to Baylis, Illinois. This was the home of Merton’s maternal family.

The 1910 census shows Merton in Nebraska with a family, and the 1920 census shows they have 9 children.

This story came from Doyle Spahr, grandson of Merton Leonidas Jeffers. Merton was raised by his aunt Rachael and Uncle Thomas Potter after Merton's father died. He and his family then moved to the homestead of his parents where they lived until the 6th of March 1906, when they moved to Aurora, Nebraska. Merton was struck by lightening and killed on 15 Jul 1931 while visiting his sister Clara in Michigan. Lena (Merton's wife) and Merton were 2nd cousins.

Merton L. “Onnie” Jeffers was 51 years old when he passed away in 1931 from being struck by lightning.
