Biography
John was born in 1851, son of William Jeffers & Sarah J Knight
John was one of seven children born to the family.
In 1860 the Jeffers family lived in Riley, Vigo, Indiana. [5] Ohio born William Jeffers (39) Farm Laborer with wife Sarah Jeffers (35) and children Martha A Jeffers (15), James Jeffers (12), Hale C Jeffers (10), John Jeffers (8), Joseph Jeffers (5) & Walter Jeffers (3).
John Jeffers married Sarah Arabelle "Bell" Staggs on 24 October 1872 in Vigo County, Indiana. [1]
The couple had eight children in Indiana and Texas between 1873 and 1891. One daughter (possibly the last-born daughter) apparently died young, according to family lore. The daughter often seen recorded as "Elena" or "Elener" is apparently a mis-reading for son Elmer, whose name is misspelled on the 1900 census but who is enumerated as a "son".
John's family moved from Indiana to Parker County, Texas sometime between the summer of 1878 and the fall of 1879.
In 1880 the family is living next door to John's father-in-law, William S. Staggs in Precinct 6 and 8, Parker, Texas. [2] John Jeffers (28) Farmer with wife Sarah A Jeffers (23) and children Laura A Jeffers (7), Jane Jeffers (3) & Jessie Lee Jeffers (8/12).
By 1900 John appears to have separated from the family, who lived at that time in Dallas.
He passed away in 1930, aged 78 [3] and was buried at the Laredo City Cemetery. [4]
