Thomas was born in 1866. Thomas was a Blacksmith in County Durham, from a line of blacksmiths. He married Sarah Hannah Bush, and had several children, but his wife died in 1909. He remarried to another Sarah, this time Sarah Jane Sunderland (known as Jane). The family were living in Washington Durham prior to emigrating to New Zealand, where Thomas had risen to be a Blacksmith manager.
They arrived in New Zealand in about 1913 and settled into the mining town of Pukemiro, a few miles from Huntly. He had been brought out to New Zealand to be the workshop manager of the mining operation.
Thomas' son, John, died in an accident at the Pukemiro mine in 1917. Thomas himself died two years later in 1919 at the age of 53. He was survived by a widow, three sons and two daughters.
He was interred at Kimihia Cemetery, commonly known now as Huntly Cemetery. The mine was closed for the day so that his fellow workers from the mine could attend the funeral.
