census information tells us that George was born approx 1830 in Carlisle, Cumberland. We also know that during the period 1853 to 1854, the family first appeared to be living in Bury. After this there is a child born in Ireland and then another in Bury before yet another in Ireland. After 1864, the family then appear to settle down in Bury.

I need to find George in both the 1851 and 1841 census. In the 1841 his eldest child Henry was born however, i think I have found him living as a grandson to the Cook family in Carlisle. This does not help with my search for George. As his birth was before the start of civil registration it is impossible to discover how many George Jeffersons were born around this period and this makes it difficult to identify a good match.

In 1841 George would have been 11. An ancestry family tree submission has George as the child of Thomas and Ann Jefferson.

given the consistency of age and place of birth in later census there is only one record that seems to match Georges known details. He is indeed living in Carlisle, aged 13, with parents Thomas and Ann. The age is slightly incorrect compared to what George gives later but the information would have been provided by his mother or father at this point and there may be a slight inconsistency over what they know and what George knows in later census.

A search of this family in 1851

According to Henry's marriage certificate his father was George Jefferson and Iron Moulder. I have found George and Henry living together in the 1861 census and this provides a framework for the family.

George wife is given as Ann and his birth details are given as 1830,Cumberland. His wifes birth details are born 1831, Gloustershire. An ancestry World tree submission gives Anns maiden name as Cook and George parents names as Thomas and Ann. However, I need to prove thisis correct before accepting although the details have been entered to aid searches.

In the 1861 census George is aged 32, and his eldest child Herny aged 10. This means I am looking for a marriage between 1845-1851 as George would have been 17 in 1845 and Henry was born by 1851. A search of Freebmd reveals 5 marriages in this period and none of them appear to take place in a district that corresponds with what we know of the family. Namely that Henry and his next sibling were born in Cumberland.

Having just found the 1851 census for Anne Cook in which she is living in Botchergate, Cumberland and already married I will search again on the freebmd using the first name ANNE rather than ann. This produces no results.

An IGI search which does cover some of the Carlisle parishes reveals no relevant entries. A search of the BIVRI reveals no entries either.
