Biography

Jessie Jefferson was born in Bridgehampton, Sanilac, Michigan on 27 Sep 1877 to parents George and Nellie (Curry) Jefferson.

Jessie, at age 18, married James Henry Kelly on December 12, 1894 in Sanilac Centre, Sanilac County, Michigan. She lived in Moore Township, Sanilac County, Michigan at the time and was a homekeeper.[1]

1900 U.S. census James (age 36 , spelled Kelley) and his wife Jessie (age 23) were living in Moore Township, Sanilac, Michigan with their children Archie (age 5), Vera (age 3), and Dewey (age 1). They have been married for 5 years. Jessie has had 3 children and all are living. James immigrated in 1883 and has been in the U.S. for 17 years. James is a farmer. [2]

James was a farmer during the 1910 United States census. The family lived in Moore Township, Sanilac County Michigan. Living on the family farm was husband James (age 44), wife Jessie (age 32) and their children Archie (age 15), Vera (age 13), Dewey (age 11), Marie (age 8), Cynthia (age 5), George A. (age 3), and six-month-old Eldon. James and Jessie had been married for fifteen years. Jessie has had 7 children and all are living. Archie, Vera, Dewey, and Marie attended school. Archie is also a farm laborer/home farm. [3]

During 1920 U.S. census James (age 55. spelled Kelley) and his wife Jessie (age 42) were living in Mackinac, Michigan with their children Archie (age 24), J. Dewey (age 21), Ella Marie (age 17), Cynthia (age 15), George Adam (age 13), Thomas Elden (age 10) Erva (age 7) and illegible female (age 4). James was born in Canada. Erva was born in Kentucky. All the others were born in Michigan. James immigrated in 1883 and was naturalized in 1883. James is a farmer. Archie is a chauffer/livery. Dewey is a farm laborer. Ella is a public school teacher.[4]

1930 U.S. census James (age 65) and his wife Jessie (age 52) were living on a farm in Portage, Mackinac, Michigan. They own their home. James is a farmer.[5]

1940 U.S. census James (age 75) and his wife Jessie (age 62) were living in rural Mackinac, Michigan with their son George (age 32). It is the same place as in 1935. James was born in Canada-English. Jessie and George were born in Michigan. Highest grade completed: All 8th grade. [6] NOTE: James and Jessie are living next door (on same census sheet) as Jessie's brother William, his wife Elizabeth and their son Wilford.

13 June 1962 mother Jesse Kelly was listed as a survivor in daughter Cynthia Kelly]Macauley's obituary. [7]

Jessie Jefferson Kelly passed away at age 89 on 29 Apr 1967 in Mead Nursing Home in Sandusky, Sanilac, Michigan after a long illness.[8]

She is buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Sandusky, Michigan. [9]

Survivors: 4 sons: Archie of Sandusky, Dewey of Wayne, George and Eldon both of Germfask ; 4 daughters: Mrs. John Doran of Germfask, Mrs. Adolphus Painter of Dearborn, Mrs Henry McGahan of Alaska, and Mrs. Vern Holler of Whittier, California. 5 sisters: Mrs. Floyd Kelley, Dearborn; Mrs. Eliza Paschal, Mrs. Naomi Stahl, Mrs. Leola Stagner, Mrs Edna martin and brother James J Jefferson, all of Bowling Green, Kentucky.
