Biography

Hubert Jesse Jeffery was born at Tenterden, Kent, eithrr in 1885 or early 1886, son of John Jeffery and his wife Caroline (Reynolds), and was christened there on 14th March 1886.^[1] In the census return of 1891, he was shown living there with his parents and five siblings, named as 'Herbert'.^[2] Ten years later he was to be found lodging with his sister Alice and brother-in-law Henry Smith at Broomfield, Kent, working as a waggoner's mate.^[3] In 1905 he married Mary Ann King at Tenterden. They were living there with two daughters in 1911, Hubert working as a bricklayer's labourer. At least three more daughters followed later.
