Biography

Born 28 Jul 1834 at "Mon Reduit", Yass NSW, where his parents had met & married while they were employed by the owners Frederick & Emiline Manton.

Susan Hanning is believed to be Susannah, born about 1841 at Southport Lancashire, with her birth registered in 1842 at Liverpool, the daughter of James Henning and Mary Ellen Middleton, who married at Liverpool in 1841. They emigrated to NSW on the "Elizabeth" in 1844. Susan later gave her maiden name as Henning, so the name Hanning on the marriage certificate may be a mis-spelling.

John Jeffery & Susan Hanning married on 17 Mar 1857 at Tumut (NSW BDM 2683/1857)

They were to have 3 children

  1. 1. Susanna (later Susan) Jeffery b 23 Dec 1857 Tumut (NSW BDM 11513/1857) – m Richard Shrimpton 1877 Hay – 4 children – 2nd m Joseph Cameron 1886 St George QLD – 5 children – 3rd m William O'Brien 1907 Cairns – 4th m Joseph Doyle 1921 Cairns – died 5 Sep 1944 Brisbane
  1. 2. John Jeffery b 29 Dec 1859 Tumut (NSW BDM 12752/1860) – d 4 Jan 1925 Queensland
  • 3. James Jeffery b 30 Jan1862 Forbes (NSW BDM 9835/1862 surname spelt Jeffrey) – d 7 Aug 1863 at Young age 1

John was about 19 when he moved with his parents John & Uranie from Oberne Creek near Tarcutta to their own farm at Gilmore Creek near Tumut . It was at Tumut that he met and married Susan and their first two children were born.

But they then moved to the Forbes area and eventually John went to his uncle William Jeffery’s property at Mary Ann Vale (now Marianvale) near Goulburn, where his uncle and cousins were engaged in timber cutting, and John worked with them as a sawyer.

Goulburn Herald 13 Dec 1862 – John Jeffery, charged with assaulting the police, was fined forty shillings; in default to go to gaol for fourteen days

The Goulburn Gaol Entrance Book, which does not detail the date or his crime, describes John Jefferey as 5ft 7 1/2in, slight build, dark complexion, black hair, black eyes, scar on left cheek

John Jeffery died in February 1863 at Mary Ann Vale NSW, cause of death: diarrhoea (NSW BDM 3565/1863). He is buried at Goulburn Cemetery.

It is most likely that Susan Jeffery began a de-facto marriage with John Walters shortly after, or before, the death of John Jeffery. Her fourth child, Matilda Jeffery, was born at Gundagai in 1863, more than 10 months after the death of John Jeffery
