Census records suggest that James and Sarah lived in Canada for a few years after they married; their first two or three children were born there. Sometime in the 1860s (perhaps 1864) they returned to Ohio and farmed there. After James died at only 37 years of age, Sarah and the children continued to farm In Union Township. She and the boys may have had help from her father who lived nearby.
