Sarah (Louisa) Jeffrey was born about 1867, Brenchley, Kent, England. She is the daughter of Edward Jeffery and Louisa Fuller. The 1871 census shows her as a 4-year-old, born Rotherfield, Sussex.

On 28th December, 1873, along with her sister, Alice Elizabeth, Louisa was baptised as Sarah Louisa - the daughters of Edward and Louisa Jeffreys. ^[2] Despite this, both were known by their middle names.

On 22nd October, 1874, Louisa, along with her parents, Edward and Louisa, and her siblings, sailed from London on the ship ”Avalanche” bound for for New Plymouth in the Colony of New Zealand. It took of 92 days, arriving on 21 January, 1875, carrying 260 passengers and was the first immigrant ship to call in at New Plymouth in 20 years. ^[3] The ship arrived at Taranaki, New Zealand, in January 1875. ^[4]
