DEATH OF MRS. A. J. SMITH.—Widespread sympathy goes out to Mr. Arthur J. Smith, of Lower Sands Farm, Calne in the loss which he has sustained by the death of his wife, which occurred with almost tragic suddenness on Monday morning, at the comparatively early age of 46. Deceased was formerly Miss Annie Rosa Jefferys, and was the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Jefferys, of Nash House, Spirthlll. She married Mr. Smith -who was the second son of the late Mr. Frederick Smith, formerly of Sands Farm, and for many years chairman of the Calne Rural District Council—some 18 years ago at the Wesleyan Church, where she and her husband regularly worshipped.

She was apparently in her usual health on Sunday, though she complained of a slight headache. Between 3 and 4 o'clock on Monday morning she awoke with acute pain in her head, fainted, and did not regain consciousness. Dr. Ede arrived about 5 o'clock, but was unable to do anything, and she passed away about 10 o'clock from haemorrhage of the brain. She leaves three children—two girls, aged respectively 17 and 12 years, and a boy of nine. Her grandmother, Mrs. Mary Jefferys, of Spirt-hill, who is well remembered by many, lived to the great age of 99 years. The funeral took place yesterday (Thursday) afternoon. The first part of the service was at the Wesleyan Church, and the remains were interred in the Nonconformist Cemetery. North Wilts Herald - Friday 10 July 1925
