Agnes was born about 1770.
Agatha was the daughter of Joseph and Margaret Jeffries. Agnes was married to William Sanders shortly after 15 January 1790 when her brother, Daniel Jefferies, and the intended groom posted a bond for the marriage.[1] It may well be that Agnes married without her father, Joseph’s, consent. In Joseph Jeffreys’ will he specified, “to be divided equally among all my sons and daughters hereafter named to wit, Joseph Jeffreys, George Jeffreys, Daniel Jeffreys, Thomas Jeffreys, Mary Kemper, Sarah Martin, Lydia Smith, Lucy Gibson, Peggy Maddux, and Aggatha Sanders’ children, but she {Aggatha] is to have the use of it as long as she lives & my Executors will pay her the interest yearly & if she becomes a widow pay her the whole Legacy…”[2] Being this specific in the instructions pertaining to that portion of his estate intended for Agatha Sanders, thereby leaving her portion to her children, may have been Joseph’s attempt to comply with the Virginia law of that day which stipulated that if a child between the ages of 12 and 16 married without her father’s written or verbal consent she would, “lose her share of the inheritance to her next of kin.” Or it might be that Joseph Jeffries simply had no use for William Sanders and did not want any inheritance he would leave to his daughter to come under the control of her husband.]
1820 – William Sanders is no longer shown as a head of household in the census conducted for Bath County, Kentucky. However, Agnes Sanders is listed and the family profile of 1820[3] is consistent with that for William Sanders in 1810 indicating that William Sanders died prior to 1820. In journals of Reverend Howe, first minister of the Springfield and Mt. Sterling churches, there is a cryptic entry for the year 1816: “Sab., 14th (April) at Mr. Sander’s – a funeral occasion, on Ps. 131, 2nd.” It’s thought this notation may refer to the funeral of William Sanders. One month later, Polly Sanders married James Kincaid and the marriage bond was posted by Robert Sanders presumably because her father was no longer available to perform this act.
1830 – Aggy Sanders appears as the head of household with a family profile consistent with that of 1820 projected forward ten years and taking into account the marriages known to have taken place in the interim. A Robert Sanders also appears on this census.
6 February 1841 - Agnes Sanders wrote her will in Bath County, Kentucky.[4] Children named in the will: Lucy Camilla English, Polly Kincade, Lydia Walker, and Louisana Branch.[4] Executor: Andrew English and Witnesses: Mathian Gossett and Joshua Barnes[4] Her will was probated 11 April 1842.[4]
