Biography

Parentage; Date and Place of Birth

The parentage of William Jellye is unknown and his date and place of birth are uncertain. Based on records indicating that he had at least four children from a marriage prior to his marriage with Eyed Atkins in 1565, William was probably born sometime in 1520-1535, with about 1530 being a reasonable round-number estimate. Since all known records for him are from Salisbury, Wiltshire, it is reasonably likely that he was born in or near Salisbury.

Marriages and Children

William Jellye had at least four children baptized either before 1558 or in a different parish (John, Clement, Joan(1) and Robert). These children all appear as son-of or daughter-of William Jellye in the St. Edmunds burial register between 1560 and 1567. Therefore they were all likely under-age, born after 1540 so most likely they were children of this same William, not of a (possible) father of the same name.

Since William did not marry Eyed Atkins until 1565, the simplest explanation is that this first wife died before 1565 and he married Eyed, with whom he had at least four more children who appear in the St. Edmunds baptismal registers (Katherin, Alice, Lanslet and Jone baptized between 1567 and 1572).

The 1564 burial register shows a very large number of burials (as many as 10 in a day) so likely a resurgence of the 1563 plague or a typhus epidemic was sweeping the area and this may have been when William's first wife died. Possibly she was not buried at St. Edmunds or they simply missed making the entry.

Based on the foregoing, it is likely that William married his first wife (name unknown) sometime in 1548-1556 and that they had the following children, all buried at St. Edmunds:

  • John, bur. May 6, 1560[1]
  • Clement, bur. February 12, 1562[2]
  • Jone, bur. December 12, 1567[3]
  • Robert, bur. September 7, 1569[4]

William married, second, Eyed Atkins on November 7, 1565 at St. Edmunds, Salisbury.[5] William and Eyed had the following children, all baptized at St. Edmunds:

  1. Katherin, bpt. June 2, 1568[5][6]
  2. Alice, bpt. September 21, 1568[5][7]
  3. Lanslet, bpt. September 24, 1570[5][8]
  4. Jone, bpt. November 21, 1572[9]

Based on marriage records for person with the name Jellye in Salisbury in 1575-1600, William may have had the following additional children:

  • Mercye, b. probably sometime in 1563-1570, m. June 3, 1588 Dominicke Wheeler at St. Edmunds[10][11]
  • Rebecca, b. probably sometime 1566-1573, m. October 31, 1591 Nicholas Morris at St. Thomas[12]
  • Richard, b. probably sometime in 1568-1577, m. June 1, 1598 Clement Burtt at St. Edmunds[13]

It is, however, possible that any or all of Mercye, Rebecca and Richard were instead the children of a different man name Jellye (or a variant thereof), such as John Jollye who had a son baptized in 1580 at St. Thomas, Salisbury or John Gellye who was buried in 1581 at St. Martin, Salisbury. No evidence has been found definitively connects them to William or any other parentage.

Death; Burial

William Jellye was buried at St. Edmund's on January 20, 1587/8.[5][14]

I proposed changing LNAB to Jellye, since all the original records spell the name that way.

I've uploaded baptism records from St. Edmunds for all the "of William" children I could find (Katherine, Alice, Lancelot and Joan). There were also several burials of children "of William" which seems to imply 2 Williams or 2 wives of 1 William. Since the burial records (John 1560, Clement 1563, another Clement 1564, Joan 1567 and Robert 1569) all say "of William" it seems they were all under-age but born before 1558 (start of parish registers) or possibly in another parish. The Alice Jelly 1590 burial might not be the daughter b.1568 as the record does not say "daughter of William" but she would have been 23 so it might still be her.

I have not added these children of William or his first unknown wife but will be happy to if you'd like.

Close examination of the St. Edmunds parish records has revealed an apparent "Richard Sr." and "Richard Jr." Jelly. Richard Sr. was married to a Mercy Unknown and his probate was Oct. 1631 (which listed "late wife Mercy") so she pre-deceased him. Richard "Jr". married Clement Burtt in 1598 and had at least 3 children in the next 4 years, one of whom was also named Mercy. My working theory is that Richard Sr. was a brother of this William. So the Mercy/Merry that has been listed as daughter of William may have been daughter of Richard Sr although records may not exist to prove this last point. I will put additional info on this profile as it's uncovered.
