Charlie Jemison was born in 1925.[1] He was the son of Edd Jemison and Susie Dickerson.[2] He was the younger of two boys.
In 1940, he attended a construction trade school in Springfield, Massachusetts for two years. However, he was still enumerated as living in his parents' home in 1940.[3] In 1942, he began work as a union roofer.[4]
Charlie married Dorothy Mae Green in 1951. They had three children, including astronaut Mae Jemison, who was the first black woman to travel into space. Around 1960, the family moved from Alabama to Chicago, Illinois, where Charlie worked as a maintenance engineer and a taxi driver.[4]
Charlie took great pride in his children and taught them to value education. He mentored African-American boys in the Woodlawn area of Chicago where he lived.[4]
Charlie died on 14 Nov 2004 of a heart attack while he was returning to Chicago with his family from a wedding in Cleveland, Ohio.[4][5][6] and is buried in Oakland Memory Lanes in Dolton, Illinois.[7]
