Biography

Event: General Info. Note: William Ledger was born on the 20th December 1826. William married Mary Ann Wright at Sevenoaks, Kent, UK on 1st April 1849, and they came out to Australia in the same year, arriving at Port Adelaide, South Australia on 17th of November . William was listed on the passenger list of the "Himalaya" as a labourer, and worked as a butcher when he first arrived in Australia , and whilst living at Albert Town. After the birth of their first child, he and Mary Ann moved to the seaside town of Brighton, where William did a variety of things, and in particular, was responsible for setting up, and successfully running at least two schools. He spent a short time in the position of Town Clerk of Brighton, but eventually went back to doing what he originally did, educating the children of Brighton. William had a reputation for turning out well educated students, and taught the 3 R's along with Music and Language. When the Education Dept set up the first state school in Brighton, William was appointed the Head of the school, where he was assisted by Mary Ann, and his daughter, Lizzie. He was active in the Institute, and the church, and was also a member of the Lodge, a trait which was passed down to the next 3 generations. William died on 21 st of June 1885, aged 59, and is buried in St Jude's Cemetery, Brighton. Mary Ann outlived him by twenty three years, she died in 1908, and is buried with William at St Jude's.

William Jemson Ledger was born about 1827 & baptised 15th April 1827 at Halstead, Kent, England, the son of William Jemson & Mary Ledger.

William Ledger, of full age, Bachelor, Butcher, of Parsonage Lane, Sevenoaks Town & Mary Ann Wright, a Minor, Spinster, of Sevenoaks Town, (daughter of James Wright, Deceased, Labourer) were married 1st April 1849 in the Parish Church of Sevenoaks, Kent, England according to the Rites and Ceremonies of the Established Church after Banns by Thos. Curties, Rector. William & Mary Ann both signed. Witnesses were Charles Winn & Ann Hooker.

Arrived at Port Adelaide, South Australia, Australia on the Himalaya on the 16th November 1849 from London.
