Biography

Cross of St George
Betty (Jenkins) Dummer was born in England.

(Research note: some of the older records have Lacock as Laycock, and the surname as Genkins but I've left it as Jenkins to make it easier for people to find so less chance of duplicating a profile.)

My great x4 grandmother, Elizabeth Jenkins, was baptised in Lacock, Wiltshire on the 1st December 1782, the daughter of 'William and Mary Genkins'. (I believe that this was William Jenkins and Mary Rose who married on the 9th March 1779 in Lacock but I want to be sure before I add their profiles.)

Following the reading of their banns, Elizabeth Jenkins married Ephraim Dummer in Lacock on the 29th May 1803. They were both recorded as being 'of this parish' and the witnesses were James Taylor and Henry 'Tayler'. We can see some slight movement in their residence and religion through the baptism places of some of their nine children. (There may have been more.) Their first daughter, Elizabeth, was baptised at Lacock on the 2nd December 1804. There was a parish burial record on the 19th January 1806 of an Elizabeth Dummer, an infant, and I fear that may have been their child. Their next child, Ephraim, was baptised on the 6th August 1806 at Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire. (In later censuses, his birthplace varied between Bradford on Avon and Lacock which are only about seven miles apart.) That particular baptism record also shows that Elizabeth was known as Betty.

The baptism of their third child, Emmanuel, is intriguing because he was baptised on the 12th May 1808 at Bearfield in Bradford, Wiltshire and their religious denomination was noted as Countess of Huntingdon's Connexion. (The actual entry was 'Immanuel Dummer, son of Ephaham and Eliz Dummer'.) So it appears as if the family were living in Bradford on Avon between about 1806 and 1808 but all their remaining children were baptised back in Lacock (William 1810, Moses 1813, James 1816, John 1818, Robert 1821 and Mary 1823). Ephraim was recorded as being a labourer. (I've included James because although his baptism record gives his parents as Ephraim and 'Mary', there was no such marriage to be found so I think it was just a clerical error.)

In the 1841 Census, Ephraim was living at Bewley Common, Lacock, and still working as an agricultural labourer.[1] Of course, that particular census rounded the ages of the adults but he was recorded as being 55 years old which actually fits with his date of baptism and death/burial age. Ephraim is living with his wife Elizabeth and three of their children: Robert (also working as a labourer), Mary, and their married son Emmanuel and his wife, Jane.

Obviously, I'm not allowed to reproduce the map and original document here but the Tithe Map and details of this area (created between 1837 and the early 1850s) can be seen at TheGenealogist or in the Chippenham Record Office. Ephraim is shown as the landowner of plot 147 which was a cottage and garden at Bewley Common. The area was measured in acres, roods and perches, and Ephraim's land was given as 26 perches. He also had to pay the vicar one shilling! The occupiers of the cottage and garden were recorded as Ephraim and Emmanuel Dummer which matches the 1841 Census.

In his last census in 1851, Ephraim is still working as an agricultural labourer and living with wife, Elizabeth, but they are now residing at Bowden Hill, Lacock.[2] They were also living next door to their four young grandchildren with their son Robert and his wife, Caroline, so I expect they were kept busy with some extra childcare!

Sadly, Elizabeth passed away just months after this census. According to her death certificate, she died at Bowden Hill, Lacock, with the cause being recorded as 'decay of nature'. She was described as Betty Dummer, wife of Ephraim Dummer, labourer, and the death was registered the next day by George Selman(?) who was present at the death and marked his name with a cross. She was buried at Lacock as Betty Dummer on the 17th November 1851, aged 69, a resident of Bowden Hill. May she rest in peace.
