1776 Project
Sergeant William Jenkins served with 11th Virginia Regiment (1777), Continental Army during the American Revolution.
This profile is part of the Jenkins Name Study.

William was born about 1762 in Wales. According to family notes of one of his daughters, Rebecca's family, he visited his uncle in Ireland when he was an early teen. There he met and fell in love with his cousin....Susannah Walker. Although his uncle was against it because Susannah was just 13, they eloped to America together in the 1770s and stayed with relatives in Virginia. Despite their young ages, they married in Isle of Wight County, Virginia. They settled there from the early 1790s up until 1807.

When the American Revolution began, William enlisted at just 15 or 16 years old. He worked his way up in rank to a Corporal and then to a Sergeant. He was a part of Colonel Daniel Morgan's Sharpshooters, Company 4, Virginia Regiments 11 and 15. He was discharged honorably in 1780. In 1807, he and Susannah along with their children moved from Virginia to Ohio.

At age 50, William volunteered during the War of 1812. He was a part of Captain Taylor's Virginia Cavalry Militia as a Private. At some point during the war, he was shot in the foot. He was crippled because of it.

He lived to be 71 years old and died in 1833. He is buried in the Bunker Hill Universalist Pioneer Cemetery in OKeana, Ohio. His Will named all of his children and his wife, Susannah as heirs.
