Wilson Jenkins was a distinguished officer in the Civil War, leading the last charge at Appamatox, according to family legend. At Sharpsburg, a bullet hit Lt. Jenkins in the forehead, but glanced off his hat band, following the band around the head and exiting out the back of the hat (Gallagher, The Antietam Campaign, p.234).
