Lemuel Jenkins and Mary Dunham were married on January 1, 1778. (Jenkins Family Bible). Captain Jenkins was a ship captain, probable whaler, and engaged in merchant shipping w/ brother Marshall and their brothers-in-law both during and prior to the Revolutionary War. Banks' History of Martha's Vineyard, Vol 1 describes their tale of economic loses that eventually forced them to move their operations to Hudson, NY on the Hudson River in 1786.[1]
