Colonel Charles Jenkinson was born in Charlbury, Oxfordshire, England and was baptized on June 13th, 1693. [1]
He was the third son of Robert Jenkinson 2nd Bt and Sarah Tomlins.
He graduated from Oxford the 6th of February 1710-11, aged 17. He was a colonel in the army, major of the blues at the battle of Fontenoy, and afterwards lieutenant colonel.[2]
Charles married Amarantha (Cornewall) Jenkinson [3][4] on the 7th of September 1725, at Covent Garden, London. Amarantha's father was Captain Wolfran Cornewall RN, an officer in the Royal Navy.
Charles and Amarantha had three children: Charles Jenkinson, Elizabeth Jenkinson and John Jenkinson.
The Dictionary of National Biography, mentions Charles in the biography of his son also named Charles.[5] "Charles was the eldest son of Charles Jenkinson (d. 1750) of Burford Lawn Lodge, in the forest of Whichwood, Oxfordshire, colonel of the royal horse guards blue at Dettingen. Charles's father was the third son of Sir Robert Jenkinson of Walcot, Oxfordshire, and Hawkesbury, Gloucestershire, second baronet. His grandfather, Robert (d. 1677), was created a baronet in 1661. The Jenkinsons descended from Anthony Jenkinson [q.v.], and had been long settled in Oxfordshire, the first four baronets being successively M.P.'s for the county."
Charles Jenkinson died in 1750, and was buried in Shipton under Wychwood, Oxfordshire, England on June 23rd.[6][7]
His Will was proved at London on the 26th of March 1751. [8]
Charles left two Annuities to his wife Amarantha:
"Memorand: that Col. Charles Jenkinson late of Whitchwood Forest in Oxfordshire Dyed possessed of Five Hundred Pounds Annuities at __ Cent Anno 1745 and by his Last Will & Testament dated 14th February 1749-50 Constituted and Appointed his Wife Amarantha Jenkinson now his Widow & Relict Sole Executrix in which having made no mention of these Annuities the said £500 is at her disposal. Probate dated at Doctors Commons 26th March 1751 Registered 9th May 1751 No.215" [9]
"Mem: That Col. Charles Jenkinson of Whichwood Forrest in Oxfordshire in the will and Probate Esquire died possessed of Three Hundred & thirty Pounds Ann. 1747. And by his last Will and Testament dated 14 February 1749/50 appoint his Wife Amarantha Jenkinson but now Widow & Relict Sole Executrix but made no mention in his Will of his Annuity which are now at the Disposal of the Executrix. Probate dated at Doctor's Commons 26 March 1751 Registered the 24th April 1751" [10]
I could find no reliable source for the birth of Charles, but include this reference for further research. It states that he was born on June 13th but there is a baptismal entry (see reference 1) for that date so he must have been born before then.
I have also been unable to find any further information about Charles' Colonelcy in the royal horse guards. He is not listed in Wikipedia's entry for Royal Horse Guards Colonels.[11]
Charles was not a baronet, unlike his two brothers. [12]
