Note NI014Originally came to Missouri with his family at age 7 (in 1845).
Lived near Washington, county seat of Franklin. When the Civil war was
declared, he enlisted in the Confederate Army at Richmond, Va., where his
parents had lived and died. He was a Captain of the 59 Virginia Infantry, Company "C". He waited until the war was over to marry Hattie
Patton.
When he returned to St. Louis, he was ragged and poor, a gunshot wound in his
ankle and one in his right-hand index finger. He took what money he and his
wife had and bought a little farm 35 miles from St. Louis. They bought horses,
cows, chickens and turkeys. From the start, they were happy and prosperous.
There were, after the war and freeing of the slaves, many roaming negroes and
soldiers stealing and fighting and killing. There was little or no police
protection. JLJ's horses were all stolen one night. When the children came of
school age, they sold the farm and moved to Liberty, Mo., and bought a lumber
yard. He sold lumber for the old courthouse for repairs. He didn't like this
business, so he sold it to a friend and moved to Kearney, Mo., and opened a dry
goods store. His wife had a millinery in the same building.
Was editor of the Kearney (MO) Clipper newspaper. He was also Mayor for two
terms, city marshall 15 years (during which time he chased Jesse James), and
city tax collector for two years.
Buried, along with his wife, in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Kearney, Clay County,
MO, up the hill from the grave of famous outlaw Jesse James.
