Biography

Cornelius Jenne, the son of Lettice Jenne and Desire Blackwell, was "born in Dartmouth, Mass., Nov. 3, 1697, died there Oct. 12, 1774 and was buried in the old Acushnet Cemetery. He married before 1721, Elizabeth..., whose parents are not know. She was born about 1697 and died Mar 18, 1743. He married secondly, Eleanor (Cole) Young, in Eastham, Mass., born Apr. 16 1711, daughter of Daniel and Sarah (Hubbard) Cole and widow of Henry Young, who died after 1738, leaving Eleanor with three children. Cornelius and Eleanor were married in Eastham Dec. 3, 1745."

"In the town meeting records of Dartmouth, Cornelius was chosen tithingman in 1728, surveyor of highways in 1731, he served on the grand jury in 1732, was one of the constables in 1738, and served on the petty jury, in 1747 he was again surveyor of highways and served in other offices."

"His land transactions are numerous, so much so that we have not tried to list them. Between 1732 and 1741 he added to his inherited land by purchases from Nathaniel and Jethro Delano, Thomas Church, Elnathan Eldred, Louis Demoranville, and William Spooner. Between 1736 and 1765 he sold to Elnathan Aldridge, George Babcock, Jeremiah Bennett, Louis Demoanville, Deliverance Eldridge, Jonathan Kenney, Moses Mendell, Elnathan Spooner, Joseph Taber Jr. and Zaccheus Toby."

"Cornelius wrote his will on Sept. 3, 1771. He mentioned his wife, Eleanor, sons Jethro, Levi, Benjamin, Cornelius, Timothy, Jehezel, Henry and Jabez, and daughters Jean, Jemima, Deborah, Esther, Hannah and Rebecca. Cornelius and both his wives are buried in the famous old cemetery in Acushnet, where their gravestones read:"

Lieut. Cornelius Jenne, Died Oct. 12, 1774 aged 77
Elizabeth his wife died Mar. 18, 1743 age 46
Eleanor his wife died Feb. 14, 1786 age 74."[1]

The Will of Cornelius Jenne

In the name of God amen the third day of Sept. one thousand seven hundred & seventy one I Cornelas Jenne of Dartmouth in the county of Bristol & Province of the Massachusetts Bay in New England being through the goodness of God in perfect mind & memory but calling to mind the mortality of my body & knowing that it is appinted to all men once to dy I do make & ordain this my last will & testament that is to say principelly & first of all I gave & recomend my soul in to the hand of God that gave it and my body I recomend to the earth to be buried in decant Christeant burael and as touching such worldly estate as it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life I gave & dismise and despose of the same in the following maner & form with many [resarves?] and exciptions as shall be here after mentioned.

imprimas I gave and bequeath unto Elaner my tru and loving wife the whole of all the estate that she brought to me that shall have a being at my decs & hur choice of one cow & three euws sheep and hur choice of one fether beed & the beding that doth belong to the beed & the beedsted and beedcord togeather I gave her the improvement of the grait room in my dwelling house & the sellar under it & liberty to bake in the oven and to pase two & from the same togeather with the improvement of the one half of the raile estate that I shall here after give to my son Timothy & the lotterry so long as she shall remain a widow

Item I gave and bequeath to my son Jethro and his heirs & assigns for ever a certain tract or percel of land butted & bounded begining at an aple tree standing on the esterly side a stone wall westerly of my dwelling house & from thence to run west ten degs south to a brook the westerly bounds of my homsteed land & then to begin a gain at the aforesd aple tree on the west side the so wall & to run notherly on the west side the sd wall thirteen rods & a bout ten feet to a heap of stones by sd wall & then to turn & run west twenty three degs north to the aforesd brok & from thence to run & bound to the aforesd brook down stream untill it comes to the line that run from the aforesd appel tree west ten degs south

Item I gave and bequeath to my son Levi and to his heirs and assigns for ever a certain tract of land butted & bounded begining at an apel tree aforesd a bound of Jethro land & from thence to run by said Jethro land west ten degs south to a stake standing by a brook a bound of sd Jethro land & then we begun a gain at the aforesd apele tree & run as the fence & wall now stands southerly westerly & easterly untill it come to the lain that leads from my dwelling house & then turn & run westerly as the fence now stands to the aforesd brook and then to turn & run & bound to the aforesd brook up stream untill it come to Jethro land

Item I gave and bequeath to my son Benjamin to him his heirs assigns for ever a certain tract of land butted & bounded begining at a stake standing on the south side of the aforesd. lain by the aforesd. brook & from thence to run easterly as the fence & wall now stands untill it come to a stone wall that runs southerly & then to turn and run southerly as the wall now stands to the southerly end & on the same corse to Capt. Delano land & then to turn & run westerly by Delano land to the aforesd. brook & then to turn & run northerly upstream & [?] to the aforesd. brook untill it comes to the aforesd. stake standing on the south side of the land as aforesd.

Item I gave and bequeath to my son Cornelas and to his heirs and assigns for ever a certain tract of land butted & bounded begining at a maple tree old marked standing in the raing of Jonathon Hathaway land & from thence north two degs east fourteen rods to a stake & then to turn & run west sixteen degs & three quarters of a deg south to a stonewall & then to turn & run southerly as the wall now stands by the line of the land that I gave my son Benja. to Capt. Delano land and then to turn & run easterly and northerly by the lines of the sd. Delano & Jonathon Hathaway lands to the maple tree first mentioned.

Item I gave and bequeath to my son Timothy and to his heirs & assigns for ever a certain tract or percel of land with all the bulding standing on the same butted & bound begining at a stake the north east corner bound of hte land that I gave my son Cornelas & from thence west sixteen degs & three quarters of a deg south by the sd. Cornelas Jenne line to a stone wall a bound of the land that I gave to my son Benja. and from thence to turn & run by Benja. line northerly as the wall now stands untill it comes to the aforesd lain & then to turn & run westerly by the line of Benja. land westerly to the aforesd stake first mentioned the north east corner bound of Cornelas Jenne land as aforsd & run north two degs east by the line of the said Hathaway land sixteen rods & a bout ten foot to a stake & then turned & run west one deg to one quarter of a deg south to the est end of sd stone wall & their to run as the wall now stands to the west end whare there stands a pair of bars to the eastward of my now dwelling house & then to run north ten degs & a half deg east nine rods to a stake & then to run west twenty two degs & one half deg north to a stone wall & then to turn & run southerly westerly & easterly by the land that I gave to my two sons Jethro and Levi untill it come to the aforesd lain that leads from my dwelling house & then to run westerly by the land that I gave to my son Levi to the brook aforesd & then to run southerly doun stream to the land I gave to Benja. Jenne.

out of this gift of land to my son Timothy as above expressed I do except & resarve a way to pas & repas through gate or bars from the westerly corner of the land that I gave to my son Cornelas to run northerly on the east side of the wall to the aforesaid lane as aforesaid way I gave the benifet & improvement to my son Cornelas & to his heirs & assigns for ever also I gave to for ever a way to pas & repas through the land that I have given to my son Timothy where it now goes & to come in to the north end of the aforesd lain & further more I do resarve the benifet & improvement to his mother as to hur set forth further more I do exccipt & resarve liberty for my son Hennery to put what flax & English grain that he shall raise in sum convenant place as Hennery shall think proper in the barn & to thrash it out at his pleashure & to git or brake his flax when it suts him to him his heirs & assigns & Timothy shall keep said barn in such repair that hens dont git in & distroy or hurt his grain and flax.

Item I gave and bequeath to my son Jahazel to him his heirs and assigns for ever a certain tract of land butted & bounded begining at a stake the north east corner bound of the land that I gave to my son Timothy & from thence north two degs east by the line of the aforesd Hathaway land forty one rods to a ded pine tree standing in the range of the sd Hathaway land & then to turn & run west thirty degs south to the end of a wall & then to run westerly as the wall now stands to the west end & so as the wall doth raing to the aforesd brook & then to turn & run & bound to the brook southerly to Jethro land & then to turn & run easterly southerly & easterly by the land of Jethro & Timothy to the first bound mentioned together with the benifet & improvement of the way as mentioned in my gift to Timothy.

Item I gave and bequeath to my son Hennery a certain tract of land to him his heirs & assigns for ever that is to say all the remainder of my homesteed land that I have not yet disposed of butted & bounded on the south by Jahazel Jenne land on the east by the aforesd. Hathaway land on the north by Samll. Jenne land & on the west by the aforsd. brook togeather with the benifet & improvement of the barn & way as set forth in my gift to Timothy of land & buildings.

Item I gave and bequeath to my son Jabez Jenne and to his heirs and assigns for ever one acre of salt marsh meadow with all my upland adjoyning sd acre lying at a place called & known by the name of Samson meadow & at the southerly end there of.

Item I gave and bequeath all the remainder of my salt marsh meadow to my sons that is to say Jethro Jahazel Benja. Hennery & Timothy to be equielly devided beteen them as to quantity and quality.

Item my will is that my son Jethro receving what I have given him that he shall be holden ot pay his sister Jean four dolors one year after my dece.

Item my will is that my son Cornelas receving what I have given him that he shall be holden to pay his sister Jemimur four dolors one year after my dece.

Item my will is that my son Jahazel receving what I have given him that he shall be holden to pay his sister Debroh four dolors one year after my dece.

Item my will is that my son Benja. receving what I have given him that he shall be holden to pay his sister Easter four dolors one year after my dece.

Item my will is that my son Hennery receving what I have given him that he shall be holden to pay his sister Hannah four dolors one year after my dece.

Item my will is that my son Levi receving what I have given him that he shall be holden to pay his brother Jabez four dolors one year after my dece.

Item my will is that my son Timothy receving what I have given him that he shall be holden to pay his sister Rebeka four dolors one year after my dece.

Item I gave and bequeath to my daughter Rebeka one fether beed and beding as I leave them & three euws sheep.

Item my will is that all my personel estate with in dors & out that I have not here to four disposed of shall be sold for the payment of my debts & funrel charges & if my personel estate as aforsd. dont amount to the sum & sums that I am indebted then my will is that is to say in consideration of what I have here to four given to my sons Jethro Cornelas Jahazel Benja. Hennery Levi & Timothy there receving of there parts of my estate as set forth to them as above sd. my will is that and each of them shall be holdern to pay equielly there prepotion of my debts that my personel estate as aforesd dont ansure & pay and further more I do by these presents constitute make and ordain my son Hennery Jenne to be my sole executor of this my last will & testament confirming this & no other to be my last will & testament in testimony whereof I have here unto set my hand & seal the day & year above written signed sealed & declared to be his last will & testament in presents of us in Dartmouth by the sd. Cornelas Jenne.

I've added a list of his children to the biography, and notice that the rest of it appears to be a cut and paste from the Jenny genealogy. Is there a project member who would like to take on the task of re-writting it so that we're not in violation of copyright laws? It shouldn't be too difficult to do.
