Biography

Tiny was the oldest daughter of Louis and Margaret Jennings. One of thirteen children, her father was a farmer in and around Ohatchee AL. She worked on the farm and attended school until 9th grade, about 1917. At age 16, she obtained a job at the Anniston Inn. A popular hotel and restaurant in Calhoun County. She was a hostess/cashier. She was thrilled to be off of the farm and lived in a room at a boarding house in Anniston. It was there that she met General Pershing! He was in the area for army business at Fort McClellan, AL. She told that story with pride!! She worked there for almost 2 years and one Saturday at a cemetery workday, in Ohatchee, she met the dapper George Phillip Johnston, a widower, with two young. Children. Their courting began and they were married less than 3 months later. (8/8/1920)Clearly G.P. was looking for a " mother" for his young children.!! He owned a car and a home in Birmingham, AL he was considered quite a catch!. 😂😂 She was about to learn about being a step mother, with a mother in law in tow, living in the city! She would go on to be the mother of two more children, known as an excellent mother, cook, and seamstress. (Embroidery, tatting, crotcheting, and elaborate clothing made for her children and grandchildren) She was generous to a fault. A faithful church member and Sunday school teacher as well. Much loved by all and sorely missed to this day. One of the sweetest people ! (Written by her granddaughter, Martha O'Dell)
