Biography

Americus Jennings did not have a birth date nor a death date in the green booklet, listed are the children and that he did fight in the civil war from beginning to end.. He was kept in yankee prison 6 years after the war. (dates are updated with new info.).


"Before the civil War Americus Jennings and family of 6 boys and one girl were living on Peach Tree St in Atlanta GA. He ran a furniture store. " "When the war broke out, He went to war with his three older boys into the southern army and fought the whole war through. One of the sons was killed but he and the other two returned home to find his wife dead and his daughter had disappeared."

the USA Civil Was was between April 12, 1861 – May 9, 1865 he was kept in prison for 6 years after the civil war.

he had 7 children listed in the green booklet and we only know the birth date of William Johnson 4-3-1842 from this info I was able to match the 8th child info on Find a Grave.

Americus found that his wife had died. the 3 younger sons taken care of by relatives after Shermans March in the Civil War.

note: that Aunt Emma gathered the data recorded on the Book of our Family Tree, Jennings.

  • Jennings, The Big Book of our family tree. 5x7 green copy and in some places I refer to it as McCullough/Standifer/Jennings/Sanders booklet. with Georgia roots info as the Jennings came to America about 1630 and they settled in Charlestown and in 1636 in Portsmouth, Rhode Island.

The family story said about 7 brothers came to USA in the beginning of the 18th century. mostly settling in New Jersey. they are believed to be Joseph, Zebulon, Jacob, Benjamin,Jonathan,John and David Jennings.

Age 47.

Mary married Americus Jennings the only son of of John and Elizabeth Childs Jennings. Mary was born 1816 in Georgia and married Americus abt 1839 in DeKalb County, Georgia. Mary was living in Cook, Fulton County, Georgia at the time of her death.

Mary and Americus's married 1839. children are:

Thomas H. b 1840 William J. b 1842 Henry C. b 1844 Emily Ann b 1846 Rubin A. b 1851 James W. b 1853 John R. b 1856 Sally. b 1862

Email from Jonathan Shields on April 2, " Americus Jennings first wife was Mary Higgins. She died around the Atlanta, GA area sometime during the war. Then, he married his 2nd wife: Catherine Ford.

Americus Jennings is buried in Macedonia Cemetery in Chattooga County, Georgia.

His youngest son that fought in the civil was was Henry Clay Jennings, attached picture Is of Henry Clay Jennings in his later years. Henry was the last known veteran of Floyd County, GA and is buried at Myrtle Hills Cemetery,Rome, GA. USA. Also, William Johnson Jennings was the eldest to fight and Thomas H. Jennings was captured, nothing could be found about him since. Jonathan Sheilds noted his roots are linked to Reuben. "
