James Jennings was born in 1755,[1] probably in South Carolina. The identity of his parents is not known.
He was a soldier of the American Revolution.[1] In 1778, he enlisted on the Pacolet River and served under Captains John Montgomery and George Wiley in Colonel William Henderson's South Carolina 6th Regiment. On Feb 1780 he transferred to the 1st South Carolina Regiment and was taken prisoner at the Fall of Charleston. After his release, he served in Colonel Thomas Brandon's 2nd Spartan Regiment of Militia.[2][3][4]
James may have had an earlier marriage, but we can be certain of his marriage to Polly, whose maiden name we do not know.[3] Some of the children of James Jennings were:
In 1790, James was enumerated on the census for Union, Union, District 96, South Carolina.[5] He remained in what had become Union District in 1800.[6]
By 1820, James had moved to Caldwell, Kentucky, where he is listed in the 1820 Census.[7]
James Jennings passed away on 24 Aug 1834 in Caldwell County, Kentucky.[1] He was buried in Lebanon Cemetery, Princeton, Caldwell County, Kentucky.[8]
