Biography

Samuel Jennison was born at Watertown, Massachusetts, 15 December 1642 ("15 (10) [1642]"), son of Robert Jennison and his second wife Grace Kilbourne.[1][2][3]

He married Judith Newcomb at Watertown on 30 October 1666.[2][4] Judith was born 16 January 1645/6 at Braintree, Massachusetts, daughter of Francis and Rachel (Brackett) Newcomb.[3][5][6]

He was admitted a freeman on 11 October 1682.[2][3]

Ensign Samuel Jennison was Town Clerk in 1691.[3][7]

Ensign Samuel Jennison died at Watertown on 15 October 1701, at the age of 58.[2][3][8]

His wife Judith died in Watertown ("an Aged Widow Woman") on 1 March 1722/3.[2][3][9]

Children

The following are the children of Samuel and Judith Jennison, all born in Watertown:[2][3][7]

  1. Judith, born 13 day, 6 month 1667[10]; married first, James Barnard on 16 December 1692; married second, John Bemis on 30 May 1726.[3][7][11]
  2. Mercy, born 23 day 11 month 1669[12]; died young.
  3. Rachaell, born 8 day, 8 month 1671[13]; married Timothy Barron, 10 March 1698/9.[3][14]
  4. Mercy, born 28 February 1671[15]; died young.
  5. Samuel, born 12 October 1673[16]; died 2 December 1730[17]; married Mary Stearns 2 November 1699.[7][18]
  6. Elizabeth, born 17 April 1676[19] (a twin); died before her father.[3][7]
  7. William, born 17 April 1676 (a twin); married Elizabeth Golding, 20 June 1700, at Charlestown, Massachusetts[20]; lived in Sudbury, Massachusetts[2]; died in Worcester, Massachusetts, on 19 September 1741/4?.[3][7]
  8. Peter, born 1 October 1681[21]; died at Sudbury 17 January 1722/3.[22]; married Jean/Jane ___.[3]
  9. Grace, born 11 February 1678[23] married John Holdin, 7 November 1699.[3][24]
  10. Robert, born 24 July 1684[25]; removed to Sutton; married widow Dorothy (Thomas) Whittemore. [7][3]
  11. Lydia, 18 May 1688[26], baptized May 20; married John Traine on 5 May 1705.[7][3][27]

[Note: WatertownVR has births of two daughters named Mercy, but some sources list one daughter Mercy with birth Feb. 1699 and death Feb. 1670/1. This is more likely as Rachaell and the second Mercy's birth are too close together. Also note William is not in Watertown births as are all his siblings, but is cited as a twin with his sister Elizabeth by other sources.][3][7]

Will & Estate

Samuel Jennison's Will dated 30 November 1700; proved 3 November 1701; recorded Middlesex County Probate 10:167; mentions:[3][7][28]

  • wife Judith
  • eldest son Samuel Jr.
  • son William of Sudbury
  • son Peter
  • youngest son Robert (then a minor)
  • daughter Judith Barnard
  • daughter Rachel Barron
  • daughter Grace Holden
  • youngest daughter Lydia (then under 18)
  • grandchildren: Mary Jennison, James and Samuel Barnard, Timothy Barron, and John Holden
  • grandhchild Joseph Bowman (supposedly illegitmate son of daughter Rachel and Joseph Bowman)[3]

His inventory, dated 31 October 1701; house, &c., £95; farm, 50 acres, £90; farm, 20 acres, £60; 12 acres in lieu of township, &c., £5; one acre of meadow, £10. Total, real and personal estate, £383.1. Research Notes

  • Robert Charles Anderson in his Great Migration, Volume V, page 162 feels that the "M" in Macomber has been misinterpreted and is actually an "N" and he treats the name as Newcomb.[6]

Jennison-469 and Jennison-3 appear to represent the same person because: same parents (both are sets of dupes), same birth place, similar timeframe. Same spouse (dupes). Same death date and place. Please merge

Jennison-374 and Jennison-3 appear to represent the same person because: They are both married to the same spouse, Judith Jennison, and have the same father, Robert (who is already under pending merge).

This is some very nice work! On a WikiTree technical note, constructs such as <ref name=WatertownVR/> need to refer to a previous citation. You can see under Sources that #1, #4 and #8 don't refer to anything. Full disclosure: Samuel is my 8thGG, so if you have no objections, I would be very happy to clean these up for you and learn about Samuel at the same time.
