Birth: 27 January 1881, at East Taieri, Mosgiel, Dunedin. [1][2]
Mary was the daughter of Margaret (nee Stewart) and Anders Jensen. Margaret and Anders were married in 1880 in New Zealand [3]. Anders was a native of Denmark, and a farmer in New Zealand. His surname Jensen indicates that his father, or he, was a "son of Jens" - see Scandinavian family name etymology. Scandinavian names were anglicised when a family emigrated, and often the children took on the patronymic name of their father for consistency. Ander's passed away on 26 March 1937, aged 84yrs. At the time of his death he had been in New Zealand for 62 years [4]. Margaret passed away just a few months later on 9 July 1937, aged 79yrs [5].
