A probate was held 1 March 1802 at Vestsida, Porsgrunn after the deceased sailor Isak Jensen, lodging with Helge Olsdatter. He died at a sea voyage with the ship «de 4re Brødre» last fall. His siblings inherit:
1. Nils Jensen, since long of age, and according to rumours, having died abroad,
Guardian for the two absent brothers: their brother-in-law Harald Olsen, for Anne Margrete: her brother-in-law Hans Ottersen.
Later in the probate, Helge Olsdatter shows a certificate from the pastor, declaring that the father of her child Ingeborg Sophie, born out of wedlock, was the late Isach Jensen who had promised to marry her. She claims inheritance for her and the child, which is rejected by the probate court. (Children born out of wedlock had no right to inheritance after their fathers until 1915 in Norway. Before 1798 betrothal was considered legally binding, and children born after betrothal between their parents, but before the wedding, were treated as legitimate. But when the "official" betrothal was abolished in 1798, this right disappeared. LBK)[2]
