Biography

Reginald Raymond (known as Ray) Jepson was born at 23 Caroline Street, Clifton Hill, Victoria, Australia on 12 October 1917.[1] His parents were Reginald Parsonage Jepson and Ruby Iamalia Milkins, also known as Ruby Lillian [2]. He was an only child - his father deserted his mother when he was young (family information).

14 March 1935 aged 18 years, Ray voluntarily enlisted in the Militia Forces, his army number being 319626. He was allotted to 11 Fld Bde. Ray was described as being 5 ft 9" tall, weight 130 lbs, chest minimum of 31" and maximum 34 1/2", with 6/6 eyesight and hearing. His address was given as 25 Marlborough Street, East St. Kilda and next of kin as Ruby Lilian Jepson. Ray's occupation was described as 'Packer' and business address as 236 Bourke St. Melbourne. This would have been Manton and Sons (previously Manton and Paull) department store which opened in March 1934 . The store was bought out by G. J. Coles in 1955 and closed 6 months later. The building received a significant re-cladding during the 1970s. It is now home to a Target store. [3]

26 January 1939 aged 21 years 10 months and Army number now 319936 Ray was enlisted in the 4th Fld Bde. His notes show he was now a Sergeant and that he was still living at the same address with his mother as next of kin plus a Sam Addun (?). His occupation was described as Radio Engineer. [4] Ray was apparently the youngest Lieutenant in the Australian Army during WW ll according to the family.

The family remember Ray as someone who loved tinkering and inventing things. According to his marriage certificate, Ray was an electrical instrument mechanic.

Ray married Norma Lesley Ashe, daughter of Leslie Norman Ashe and Grace nee Dodds, [5] in the Holy Trinity C of E Church, Port Melbourne on 15 November 1941 - the mothers witnessed the marriage. He died in Highett on 5 July 2002 and was cremated 11 July 2002. A plaque appears in Springvale Botanical Cemetery Eucalypt, Garden 1, Wall L, Niche 38D.[6]
