Amelia Ann Jersey was born in 1851, the first child of William Jersey and Philura Jenkins.
Amelia appeared on the 1851 and 1861 censuses with her parents (and siblings, in the case of 1861).[1][2]
It makes total sense that William would have named his first daughter after his little sister Ruth Amelia, known as Amelia, who lived her five short years in northern England with such courage and inspiration to the family. Amelia was the first granddaughter for the Ruth Amelia's parents. In this context, how doubly painful it must have been to lose another Amelia, this Amelia, at the age of only 17.
In the transcriptions of the Potton Baptist church, there is an entry on Page 48, that says: "July 11, 1868 ...Amelia _____ (illegible), who requested baptism and admission to the church: voted to receive them; they were baptized next day by Rev. A. A. Arms." It is comforting to think this was probably Amelia Jersey, perhaps ill and coming to terms with the fact her time on earth was coming to a too-fast end.
Amelia died on 24 Nov. 1868[3] and was interred in the family plot in Chapel Hill Cemetery, Potton, Quebec.[4]
