Biography

Esther was a Friend (Quaker)

Esther, daughter of Thomas Jessop and Mary Beals was born 3 Oct 1770 at Westfield, Surry, North Carolina.[1][2][3] She married Nathan Newby 17 Feb 1798 at Surry County, North Carolina.[4][5] An intention is recorded 20 Jan 1798.

A few records show the family either attending meeting or living in Grayson County, Virginia just over the border from North Carolina.

The family appears to have first moved to Ohio in late 1810 or early 1811.[6] The transfer request is from the Mount Pleasant Monthly Meeting in Virginia (which may help explain son Robert's apparent birth recorded in Virginia).

The Newby family moved to Jackson Township, Jackson County, Indiana by 1816 when Nathan's land entry is the earliest found in the township as recorded in the History of Jackson County.[7] A transfer certificate to Blue River Monthly Meeting in Washington County, Indiana for Nathan and his sons is dated 30 Nov 1816.[8]

The date of her husband Nathan's death has nowhere been found recorded but the year 1823 is commonly seen. Esther's death is recorded as 25 Aug 1838.[9][2] It is uncertain if her place of death was the original Indiana homestead in Jackson County or in Wayne County, Indiana.

Children

Note: documentation in process.

  • Joseph - b 27 Dec 1798, North Carolina[10]
  • Thomas - d 11 Aug 1818 (Indiana) aged 18 years, 10 months, 5 days[11] which returns a date of birth as 6 Oct 1799 however his birth as recorded in Driftwood minutes is 16 Oct 1800.[12] His birth would have been in North Carolina.
  • Robert - b 13 Apr 1805 - See Research Notes
  • Isaac (1807-1822?)[8]
  • Rachel - b 16 Jun 1809, d 19 Aug 1893, m John Allen[13]
  • William b 1811? (frequently seen to have died in 1814 but he is included in one record of the 1816 membership transfer certificate[8] but is not included in the list of family in the Fairfield MM record of the same certificate where wife Esther is included[14] though she is omitted in the Blue River MM entry).
  • Nathan (b 1813?)[8]

Research Notes

A son Robert b 1805 appears to belong to this Newby family but the records are confusing. A Robert, son of Esther (no father identified) is found in meeting minutes Grayson, Virginia with a DOB 13 Apr 1805. The indexing is confusing as this appears to be indexed as Mississinewa Monthly Meeting, Grant County, Indiana. Hinshaw's unpublished index includes this same person as born in Grayson Co, Virginia, mother Esther, father ?, on the same card as Esther Newby whose birth and death dates are those of the wife of Nathan Newby and with burial in Wayne, Indiana which is the burial place of Nathan's wife.

A transfer request of Nathan and sons Joseph, Thomas, Robert, Isaac, and William dated 24 Nov 1810 is recorded at Fairfield MM in Highland, Ohio on 28 Sep 1811.[6]
