Biography

Sarah Sally Jeter was born between about 1750 and 1775 in Lunenburg County, Virginia. She is the daughter of William Jeter and Margaret Vaughan.[1][2]

She married John Crosby Sr.. They had at least six children, as listed in her husband's will.[3]

  1. Hannah Crosby was born about 1781 in South Carolina.
  2. John Jeter Crosby Jr. was born 1785 in Camden, Kershaw County, South Carolina.
  3. Margaret (Crosby) Seely was born 1786 in Chester, Chester County, South Carolina.[4]
  4. Leonard Jeter Crosby was born about 1789 in Chester, Chester County, South Carolina.[5]
  5. Rhoda Crosby was born about 1790 in South Carolina.
  6. Mary (Crosby) DePriest was born about 1795 in Chester County, South Carolina.[6]

Her husband died 1797 in Chester County, South Carolina.[7]

She may have been living with her son John in Washington Township, Knox, Indiana, according to the 1820 census. The family histories note that they had a hard time adjusting to life without slaves after they moved to Indiana, where slavery was not legal. As a result, her son John, and other members of the Crosby family moved south to former Choctaw lands in Monroe County, Mississippi where her son John owned a slave plantation.

The 1820 and 1830 census records show Sarah Crosby living next to her daughter Mary DePriest in Lawrence County, Tennessee.

In 1840, the census record shows Sarah living in Monroe County, Mississippi near her daughter, Mary DePriest.

Sarah Sally passed away at an age of seventy-two or sevety-three in about 1840 in Monroe County, Mississippi.[8]

Research Notes

A merge for husband's profile has added children who show a different mother, Susan. A family of a different John Crosby has been merged with Sarah's husband. Research is needed to sort out the children and possibly create a new John Crosby for the husband of Susan.

Other possible children of Sarah and John Crosby (no references):

  1. William Crosby was born about 1787.
  2. Sarah Crosby
  3. Allen Crosby (he might be listed on the 1790 census)

The following story about John Crosby and Sarah Jeter shows Sarah and Allen as children, but without references.

Jeter-490 and Jeter-568 appear to represent the same person because: Both profiles are for Sally Jeter Crosby. While 490 was created first, I believe it is more appropriate to merge both in to 568 as this profile is more complete and has relationships.
