I'm new here (thanks for contacting me, Pam Cormac) and I don't know how to answer Question #2 quite yet except with the following. My father kept and published a genealogy in some detail (weak on the ladies, though), tied it into a well-known and massive historical set of texts, and was for years the President of the Jewett Family of America, Inc. when it was based on Rowley. I have not taken any DNA tests because I don't fully appreciate the reasons why I should, or which one is best for what purposes, etc. I know I'm a Jewett because I have a lot of data and these family sticky-out ears. My birth mother died when I was five days old; it's her that I know very little about and was prevented from knowing anything. I'll stop at this point for the moment. I'm 72, married, have two kids

I was born in 1948 at the West Reading Hospital. My mother died five days later. I was raised in Shillington, PA by my father, a Chamber of Commerce exec, and -- for the first four years -- by a Mennonite nanny. I had two older siblings, three and four years older. My father re-married but had the marriage annulled within a year.; I know the woman's name but nothing else about her. He re-married again, this time to a woman who was a hospital worker/social worker who was introduced to him by his boss. She was apparently a war widow. I know her mother and aunt as well. When I was nine, the family relocated to South Williamstown, MA (in the Hopper) when my father took a job as an industrial development exec. I attended a mixture of public and private schools, and then the University of Mass. in Amherst 1966-1973. [Interesting times] I became involved in the student radio station, was very interested in news and public affairs, became the news director, got a degree in communications studies, media production and political science, and worked my way (slowly) through college by working as an ambulance attendant. My future as the next Walter Cronkite dashed, I made a video on what a good emergency medical services system would look like, became one of the first EMT's in the state, as well as an instructor, and climbed the ladder in that field, eventually becoming published in mass casualty incident management and training, and much more.

I married a trauma nurse (my second wife), had two kids (both elite athletes), edited a 20-chapter introduction to performance psychology for them, and now have three grandkids (two more added through blending). I am retired/disabled.

I did some more, but made an error, a discovery and maybe more. There is an issue with my father's birth date that I'm not going to insist that I have correctly because it was always said that his birth records were destroyed in a fire in Orono. "Bob" says he was born in Bangor; Dad always said he was born in Orono. No biggie as they are less than 10 miles apart. Granddad was a professor at Univ. of Maine in mechanical engineering; I have a confirmation of that. On my mother's tale, Bryan McCullagh gave me some help some time ago and he is/was here at WikiTreee. I have his data on her siblings, marriage to my father (I have a copy of the invitation). The error was that I misread something and put down that McCracken was her mother's maiden name but that was wrong and I do not know how to correct it. So I am going to stop here and slow down and eventually we can close some of these gaps. I'll hope to bring my daughter in at some point as I know she is interested in this ancestry research too.

Hi Edwin and thank you for upgrading, 😊

I am very pleased to welcome you to the WikiTree family, your contributions will go a long way to joining the world together.

It is best to start with the New Member How-To pages, they will save you a lot of time and frustration.

If you're looking for some info Getting the Best from DNA will tell you more about how DNA kits are used on WikiTree.

I am here to answer any question you have, no matter how trivial you may think it is. There is no such thing as a silly question. Please add as much information as you can, it all helps to turn a “name” back into a person. I hope you enjoy the site as much as I do.

Happy tree climbing

Thanks for these two "starter kit" elements and I will take the advice to go slowly. I will assemble what info I have and enter it sometime in the next few days.

One question that I might add is to get help from you and others on how best to do local library research -- in the case of my mother, she lived in New Castle, PA and is known to have been a member of a church choir there, and I can perhaps pinpoint deceased siblings of hers in Pittsburgh, so a trip there might be fruitful -- and perhaps even on how to hire a private investigator.

This all, as I'm sure you and many others can attest might become delicate. I have a two-fold goal: a) to assemble what I can that will tell me something about this person and b), although this is less likely and more delicate, to identify any living relatives on the other branch(es). So much time has passed that I know that I cannot get too deep.

Thanks to you and everyone else for their help.

Hi Ed,

The community here is lovely and always so willing to help, you could post questions in the G2G forum ask questions and I'm sure someone will get back to you soon, and yes of course - I'm here too.

If your parents or anyone you have listed in the Biography for your profile is living, you may want to create a profile for them so that WikiTree's automatic privacy controls will kick in and protect their information. You can see how your or other profile's you manage will be displayed at each privacy level by clicking on the tab for "Profile (public view)".

I hope this helps, message me or "reply" below this comment if you have any others question's.

Take care,

Pam
