Clara was born in 1878[1] in the hamlet of Owsthorpe near Eastrington, Yorkshire, England, and was baptised in the parish church. She was the daughter of Isaac Jewitt and Jane Voakes.[2][3][4] At the time of the 1901 census, Clara lived with her brother, Thomas, in Gilberdyke, Yorkshire.[5]
She married Frank Jeffory Jarred in Howden, Yorkshire, in 1908[6][7] and in 1911 the family lived in Eastrington, Yorkshire, where Frank was a farm labourer.[8]
