Shuba Jay was a Malaysian actress and entrepreneur who achieved popularity through her roles in several Malaysian television shows. Of Tamil descent, she was killed, together with her husband and young daughter, in the shootdown of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 over Ukraine.
Shubashini Jeyaratnam was born 15 Jul 1976, in Malaysia. She was the eldest of five children born to Jeyaratnam Karuppiah (born1950) and his wife Kanniamah Jaya (born 1951). Her siblings included brothers Sugandran (born 1982) and Rubendran (1977).
After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communications, Shuba initially worked as a copywriter for the New Straits Times, before moving to the paper's advertising department. In 2009, she worked on the 15Malaysia project, a series of short films on various socio-political themes. In 2010, Shuba and her father took part in the first season of the reality TV show Mari Menari (Let's Dance). In 2011, she began her acting career and became known for her role in several local TV shows, including Spanar Jaya, Gadis 3 and Sugumana Sumaigal. She also appeared in several films, including Relationship Status (2012) and Tokak (2013), and performed on stage in Fourplay, Charley's Auntie and Hungry for Hope.
In 2010, she married Paul Goes in a Hindu ceremony in Malaysia, despite Paul being a Dutch Roman Catholic. They had a daughter, Kaela Maya Jay Goes, born 26 Aug 2012.
On 17 Jul 2014, the Goes family was returning to Kuala Lumpur following a visit with Paul's parents in Amsterdam. They were aboard Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 (MH17/MAS17) when it was shot down by Russian-controlled forces while flying over eastern Ukraine. All 283 passengers and 15 crew aboard the plane were killed, including the Goes family.
