Marshall was born in Hive, Yorkshire, England, and baptised in Eastrington in 1831. He was the son of John (a labourer) and Ann Jibson.[1]
At the time of the 1841 census, Marshall lived with the Braithwaite family at Greenoak in the parish of Eastrington, Yorkshire.[2] In 1851 he worked as an agricultural labourer for the Ushers in Londesborough, Yorkshire.[3] Marshall lived with his father in Eastrington in 1871.[4]
In 1880 Marshall married Elizabeth Walls in Welton, Yorkshire.[5][6] In 1881 the couple lived in Eastrington with Elizabeth's mother, Elizabeth. Marshall farmed six acres.[7] He was a cowkeeper in 1891[8] and a farmer in Gilberdyke, Yorkshire, in 1901.[9]
Elizabeth died before 1911, when Marshall lived with his nieces and nephew at Gilberdyke Mill.[10]
