Biography

ELIZABETH'S MARRIAGES:

There is some confusion on this line. There is the POSSIBILITY that Elizabeth Job, m/1 Jonathan Hayes, m/2 a Mr. Vernon, and m/3 a Samuel Hayes. Samuel may be the father of Elizabeth's children. We DO KNOW (from the Quaker records - listed below) that Elizabeth Job, d/o Thomas Job did indeed marry first Jonathan Hayes who died shortly after her marriage and almost immediately married a Mr. Vernon. It is NOT KNOWN whether there were any children from either the Jonathan Hayes or Mr. Vernon marriage. IF there were any children by Jonathan Hayes, there would NOT HAVE BEEN more than one and the child would have been born AFTER the death of Jonathan Hayes.

Though I have seen SEVERAL children listed for this Elizabeth - ALL seem to list Samuel Hayes as the father - but NONE have a marriage date of Elizabeth and Samuel!

Elizabeth was born about 1739.

I believe that the Elizabeth Job who married Samuel Hayes is not the same Elizabeth who married Jonathan Hayes. Using some of the sources cited above and some additional sources, here is the timing of these events:

1759--Elizabeth Job, daughter of Thomas, requests a certificate to NewGarden MM, which is granted. 24 Mar 1760--Wilmington, Delaware, Jonathan Hayes marries Elizabeth Harlan 2 Jan 1762--Londongrove preparative Meeting Acquaints this Meeting that Elizabeth the Widdow of Jonathan Hayes whilst under dealing for her former Transgressions of Committing Fornication & Marrying by a priest, hath accomplished her Second Marriage by a priest also, for which we leave her to men friends to testify against her.

6 Feb 1762--The Friends Appointed having Prepared a Testimony Against Elizabeth Hayes now Vernon it was approved of & Signed as usual, Henry Neal & Thomas Swayne are appointed to show it to her giver her a copy thereof if she desire it

6 Mar 1762--Given Forth at our Monthly Meeting at Newgarden held the 6th of ye 2nd mo 1762 Whereas Elizabeth Hayes now Vernon hath had a Birth Right in our Society, but for want of keeping to the Dictates of ye Spirit of Truth in her own heart hath given way to a Libertine Spirit so far as to accomplish her Marriage by a Priest being Guilty of Carnal Knowledge, & her Husband Dying soon after she being treated with by Friends made some Feigned attempt to Condemn it, but before she made Satisfaction for the first, hath of late accomplished a Second Marriage in the same Manner to a man not in Unity with us--Which Disorderly conduct being Contrary to our well known Discipline, we think it Necessary to Declare our Disunity therewith & do hereby Disown her to be in Fellowship with us untill she becomes truly sensible of her errors & make full Satisfaction for the Same, which we desire She may

1 May 1762--Elizabeth Job now Hayes having a considerable time ago Married out of the Unity of Friends by a Priest for which being visited by Londongrove Preparative Meeting by the Allowance thereof she appeared here & Produced a paper in order to condemn her out goings which being considered is Rec'd as Satisfaction & Henry Chalfont is appointed to Read it in a First Day Meeting at Londongrove & Release it to next Meeting.

It is unlikely that Elizabeth Hayes, widow of Jonathan, would marry Mr Vernon and in another month be Elizabeth Job, married to a Hayes again. I have looked for a marriage between Elizabeth Job and Samuel Hayes. It probably occurred in Delaware as did many of the "married by a priest" marriages referred to in the Quaker minutes.

On 5 Jun 1760, Samuel Hayes was called out: Londongrove preparative Meeting Informs this Meeting that Samuel Hays hath so Misconducted as to be concerned in Accompanying Several Marriages which was accomplished out of ye Unity of friends & while they were dealing with him for s'd Misconduct he accomplished his own Mar'ge by a Priest; Therefore for the clearing of Truth this Meeting Appt's John Jackson & William Swayne to prepare a Testamony ag'st him Acq't him therewith & bring it to next mo: Meeting for Approbation.

He is disowned for this behavior. If he indeed married Elizabeth Job (one of the children is named Job Hayes) then he did so outside of the Friends' Society, and was disowned for doing so. By 1 May 1762, Elizabeth has condemned marrying outside of the Quakers and the meeting is satisfied.
