Johan was born on 19 February 1865 in Göteborgs Karl Johans, Göteborg och Bohus, Sverige. He was the son of Per Gustaf Johansson and Maja Lisa Nilsdotter.[1]

Between 1865 and 1868 Johan Leonard lived in the Karl Johan parish of Göteborg, Göteborgs och Bohus, Sweden in the household of his parents Per Gustaf Johansson Friberg and Maja Lisa Nilsdotter along with his sister Ida Charlotta Alexandria[2]

Johan left Göteborg Sweden for Chicago on 7 Sep 1888 aboard the ship "Romeo" bound for Hull, England.[3]

When Johan was 24 he married Jeanna Amelia Forselius on 31 March 1889 in Chicago, Cook, Illinois. The couple had 5 children: Maria Charlotta Johnson, Gustaf Leonard Johanson, Hjalmar Nicholas Johnson, Ellis Malcolm Nathaniel Johnson and Eric Ragnar Johnson.[4]

In 1900 Johan (age 35), now known as John Johnson was living in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA with his wife Amelia and their 5 children:[5]
